Akita Rescue

Akita rescue efforts have becoming a concern for the dog lovers. They are beautiful yet big size dog and often this is the main reason that people are given up them for adoption or sending them to shelters. Fortunately the dog has been registered with American Kennel Club since 1972 and many people have paid attention on the issue.

Many of the Akita owners get the dog when it is a puppy and do not know the size of the dog when they are fully grown. They seem to be out of control for the dog owners in handling them. Actually, the dog needs to be trained when they are puppies, especially socialization skills so that they are not so aggressive towards others when they are adult dog. Failure in training them becomes one of the major factors people giving them to shelters across the country.

Luckily there are some organizations putting in lots of efforts in the rescue of Akitas, helping to address the problems of Akitas and match them to new homes. The largest Akita rescue organization in United States is the Akita Rescue Society of America, Inc (ARSA) which is founded in 1976. Other than ARSA, they are many other rescue groups involved in helping to rescue Akitas such as Akita Club of America’s Rescue Committee.

One of the objectives in Akita rescue effort is to train the public and Akita owners about the dog before they get a puppy. The reason is that many choose Akita puppies because it is adorable and have no idea about this dog breed. When the dog start growing up and showing signs of aggressiveness, they often to give away their Akita instead of finding ways to train the pet properly.

One way to have an Akita dog is to adopt one from a shelter, you may contribute to the rescue efforts. There is no worry in finding one as many Akitas are sent to shelters each year, but only few of them get a new home. If you put extra efforts on the dog from the shelters such as training and socialization skills, you may find it worthwhile; they can be adorable and nice pet. Bear in mind that this dog is very intelligent breed and quick learners. As long as you’re putting efforts in it, you will feel great having a nice pet.

The first thing that you should do when choosing an Akita is to bring him to the veterinarian to check on its health. Making sure the dog doesn’t have thyroid problem may save your lots of time in taking care of him. A thyroid problem always causes the dog to behave aggressively. However, if you find a dog with thyroid problem, do not worry on this. This can be resolved with proper diagnosis and medication.
